You’re A Busy Adult
How much time and money does it actually take to learn music?
Time
Your lesson with your teacher will take 30-60 minutes a week. Outside your lesson, you should plan to budget 1-2 hours of practice, ideally spread over at least 4 days a week. Practicing smart, 15 minutes a day is enough. Think of it like brushing your teeth. Plan to spend slightly more time as you ramp up and prepare for your first performance for friends or family.
Money
Depending on your instrument, you should plan to spend at least $100, and up to $500, on your initial set-up. Lessons can range from $20-60 a week, depending on your teacher’s demand, and annual instrument upkeep costs $100-200. All-in, your first year of dedicated musicmaking can cost anywhere from $1,200 to $3,000.
